Created specifically for the 2022 REDCAT NOW Festival, ENG is an experimental opera for spoken voices and electronics structured around the 30-minute newscast format. It is the first in a new series I am making that critically examines the American media’s ‘voice of authority’, and this episode is centered around the presentation of Egypt in Western media. It features two long-time collaborators of mine (Christina Campanella and John Rose). Instead of singing in a traditional lyrical-melodic style, the news anchors musicalize the distinctive speech patterns we have come to recognize from network news programs, the super-confident all-knowing voice of ‘objective’ information delivery.
