sotto voce is an eight channel audio wall hanging measuring 122 by 50 by 3 inches. Eight speaker drivers are arranged behind a black fabric screen so as to provide a spatial auditory experience that becomes more pronounced as one approaches the piece. Each speaker emits different sounds largely consisting of human whispers, bursts of white noise, and sine tones that move unpredictably across the surface of the piece. I consider this a narrative painting that is different for each viewer / listener. By presenting a visual void, my hope is that each person with make their own associations stimulated by the spatial composition and the sonic relations between figure and ground.
