Aviary

aviary

On entering Aviary the viewer/listener finds seven white wooden bird-cages that are suspended from the ceiling in a large white room. Though the cages appear empty, each emits a different haunting series of tones and melodies that are fragments of slowed-down bird calls. These phantom birds seem to be communicating with each other, creating a spatial sonic environment through which the viewer/listener is encouraged to wander and hear different auditory perspectives. This work was commissioned by the College Art Association for the exhibition, Sonic Absorption, at Consolidated Works in Seattle.
